The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn. (Isa 61:1,2)
This speaks of Jesus and now it speaks of us. The Spirit of God is upon us because of what Jesus has done for us. We were all brokenhearted, in captivity and in need of comfort. Jesus met all those needs and now what He has done for us, we can share with others out of love and gratefulness to God. He is so merciful and lovely. No matter what you are facing, He is a very present help in trouble. There is no comfort like the comfort of the Holy Spirit. How we can walk in comfort through any storm is by maturing in God’s love.
There are different types of love. There is love that involves an arousing of the senses which is eros. There is love that picks people as friends and that is philos, which is brotherly love, but the greatest love is the love of God, called agape, which is unconditional love. This love is not based on the merits of the one being loved but rather by the one doing the loving. We are not loved by God because of what we look like or what we can do, but rather we are loved because He sees us as precious in His sight. We can not earn God’s love. Often we compare God’s love to the examples of love that we have known. This is dangerous because no person can love like God loves. This is where having our mind renewed comes into play. Our mind needs to be renewed by the washing with God’s word. His love is unconditional and supercedes any love that we understand. How do we learn this love? Through examining Jesus. Jesus is perfect love and He was an image of the Father on earth. Jesus said, “If you see Me, you have seen the Father.’ As you seek Jesus, His love will manifest in you and it will be demonstrated through you to others. The key is to seek Him and allow His Spirit to love through you. In seeking Him and loving Him, we find comfort. There truly is comfort for all who mourn.
