Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? (Isaiah 58:6)
Many times when we choose to fast, we do it out of religious duty, not a pure heart. God clearly states here that His idea for fasting is not what we think. It is to let go of twisted bands around our minds for He took a crown of thorns for this. It is to rid of unbearable burdens because He bore our sins and transgressions on Himself. It is to set people free, for where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. It is to break off every yoke on God’s people, because He gave us His yoke which is easy.
Serving God is a relationship of love, not ritual. God’s heart is for the wholeness of our souls, the freedom of our spirits and healing in our bodies so that we can live a long and joyous life of serving to Him who created us. Always keep in mind that our heavenly Father loves us like no other can. He loves us unconditionally, totally, eternally and fully! What a mighty and great God we serve!
Fasting is part of spiritual warfare which when engaged in can greatly defeat the enemy. When we deny our physical body food for a season, we become tuned in to the voice of God ever so clearly. While fasting is not easy, it is worth it!
God’s heart is to bring freedom!
