The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
God is drawn and attracted to those whose hearts have been severed and mangled by the destruction that comes from trauma and the world. His arm and tender touch is ever present for those affected by the web of Satan. Our great God offers salvation to those whose spirit is contrite or in other words repentant. When we have gone astray and realize that we have turned our way opposite to what God requires, we have only one of two choices to make. Do we return to Him with Godly sorrow or do we continue in rebellion? When out of reverence and love we humble ourselves and turn our back on sin and turn towards God, He then rescues us.
Throughout God’s word we see Him saving and rescuing rebellious and sinful people. The one key factor is that He saved them when they repented. His heart and plans were to always rescue, but the key that opens the door to the rescue is true repentance. There are even times when we remain in bondage even after we are freed. Remember what happened to the Israelites when they came out of Egypt, out of bondage. They quickly started complaining and serving idols. They returned to the bondage even though they were released from slavery. Many times we as God’s people remain in bondage in our spirits after God has released us into freedom. One of the ways to remove Egypt from our hearts and walk in total freedom is by keeping our spirits contrite and teachable.
When repentance becomes a lifestyle that we walk in everyday, we attract God’s touch in our lives. The more we realize what displeases God and we do what pleases Him, blessings become evident in our every day walk with Him.
If your heart is broken and your spirit is contrite, you have a promise that God is near to you and ready to save. Rejoice and rest in His love and promises. He is good and faithful.
