for He satisfies the thirsty soul and fills the hungry with good things. Psalm 107:9
We are all created with a longing in our soul. Throughout life we search to fill that void with things, friends, lovers, drugs, food, sex and many other imposters but the void never seems to be filled. The reason why is we were designed to not only be connected with others but to be connected with God. No matter how much “stuff” we accumulate or how we try to fill that emptiness, we will still come up short of satisfaction. King David came to the understanding that truly God is our satisfaction. How we reach that point of understanding is different for all of us. Some go through life craving this connection and reject the very source of satisfaction which is Jesus Christ. Since we can’t feel or touch Him in person, He uses people to touch people. He uses people to love others and to heal others. We know that love is the primary goal in the life of a Christian because God’s word tells us that there is nothing greater than love and that God Himself is love. God doesn’t have love, He is love.
As we go through this life our primary goal is to learn how to truly love the way God loves. To be able to love the unloveable and love those who are wounded and hurt in their soul. When we are wounded from abuse or hurt from past experiences, that hurt carries through in our loves and comes out in different ways. When we act out due to our wounded soul, we usually push away or reject the very people that love us most. Rejecting others is a coping mechanism that pushes us to push others away. Our soul doesn’t want to be hurt again so it rejects the opportunity of love because it equates love with pain. I understand this fully because of things that have happened to me in my past. It has always been easier to find a way to run away from love because in my mind, love always brings hurt. However that is not the truth even though my feelings said it was true. Our foundation is God’s word and His word says that love never fails.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 it says, ” Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”
If we compare what we feel love is to what God’s word says that love is, we can come to the conclusion that most of the time what we thought was love in our life truly wasn’t. It could have been an infatuation or lust or using others to meet an emotional need that we have. Whatever it may be, God’s desire is that we be made whole in our soul. We are given a promise that He heals the broken hearted and He binds up their wounds. That includes us! Jesus is called the lover of our soul. He is the lover of our mind, will and emotions and that is what makes up our soul. Our emotional well being is of the utmost importance to God.
It all comes down to relationship. Cherish and work on the relationships that you have in your life because God uses these relationships to demonstrate His great love for us. Allow yourself to be loved and to love. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and through that vulnerability you will be gifted with bonds that bring healing. All of us are a work in progress and God is bringing us to places of restoration in our soul.
Our satisfaction comes from knowing God. Be encouraged today and accept His great love for you. Ask Him to bring those into your life that will bring His healing touch to you. He will answer that prayer. God is good and wants the best for you. Trust Him in this process and let His healing touch satisfy your longing soul.
God truly satisfies.
